Hi, Lenore,

Thanks for your great idea! I'll start a new wiki page for frequently used
genre terms in Judaica cataloging. Some, like Psalters and Facsimiles, are on
the tentative list that I shared earlier today, but some, such as such as
Sermons and Commentaries, are already established.

I think the terms Texts and Specimens (used chiefly in rare book cataloging)
may still need to be proposed. Haim, any word about these?

I encourage folks to email me with any other terms that should be added to
Haim's list below.

Thanks again, Jasmin

Hi Haim and Colleagues!

Thanks very much for keeping us informed about LC's new practices (barring any
retraction of the changes in response to the ALA Core SAC Working Group
report). Are you planning to maintain/expand the informal list of useful LCGFT
terms, and do you recommend posting it to the wiki? As work proceeds,
additional terms will be identified (e.g., Sermons comes to mind) and the need
for new terms will arise.

I expect it will take a while for the impacts of the new practice to be fully
documented throughout LC's cataloging documentation, e.g., SHM H2190 on Texts,
would need to reflect the shift from the old formulation of 650 #0 $a
[Religion/Sect/Special Liturgy/Holiday] $x Liturgy $v Texts, by omitting the $v
Texts, and applying additionally 655 #7 $a Liturgical books. $2 lcgft

As the reverberations of this policy change manifest and are codified, and if
many (especially PCC) libraries do not follow suit with LC's practice, I am
concerned that the impact will create confusion for librarians and patrons. I
hope that the intended benefits related to the linked data environment outweigh
the disruption.
[This statement reflects my personal $v Commentaries and 655-7 $a Commentaries,
and not the official views of any institution or organization!!!]

Many thanks,
Lenore
