A note regarding the keybord settings: KDE's keyboard switching applet is non-intuitive (and even counter-intuitive). It also makes the HOWTO KDE-specific. I would also rather avoid direct use of xkbcomp. Rather, copy the appropriate 'ar' to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/symbols , and use something like: setxkbmap ar or for Hebrew, the map is called "il": setxkbmap il Some other useful options: setxkbmap -option grp:switch,grp:shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll,ctrl:nocaps il -option grp:switch use right alt for [temporarily] switch group to Hebrew (Note that it is actually built-into some mapps, so chances you won't need to add it) -option grp:shift_toggle Use both shifts to [permanently] toggle the active group between Hebrew and English -option grp_led:scroll Make the scroll-lock led an indicator of whether or not the language is Hebrew -option ctrl:nocaps Disable caps lock (not related to Hebrew, but useful just the same) At least Mandrake, Redhat and Debian allow to easily run a setxkbmap command as part of the standard X init scripts (you just need to create a certain file, and put the setxkbmap params in it. On RH7.3 this is /etc/X11/Xkbmap or $HOME/.Xkbmap , see /etc/X11/xinitrc/xinitrc . -- Tzafrir Cohen mailto:tzafrir@;technion.ac.il http://www.technion.ac.il/~tzafrir
