When Tk/OS first added Hebrew spell-checking, based on Hspell [1], to
OpenOffice they did it by adding a spell-checking module, i.e., more code.
The great thing about that solution was that it was efficient and worked
well. The downside was that you needed a new release of that code for new
versions of OpenOffice, and only a version for Linux was ever released.
It also included a specific version of Hspell, while the generally available
Hspell continued to be improved and its vocabulary enlarged. All this
unfortunately meant that the in-code Hebrew spell-checking in OpenOffice
became a cul-de-sac (dead end).

About a year later, Dan and I (the authors of Hspell) released a different
Hebrew spell-checking support for OpenOffice: we created a "myspell" format
dictionary; Myspell is OpenOffice's native dictionary format, and once one
existed for Hebrew, it could be used on any version of OpenOffice on any OS.
In most likelyhood it will also work on OpenOffice 2.0. There's a "DicOOo"
package that you can use to install the Hebrew dictionary, and supposedly
this is available directly from OpenOffice's menus - if you don't know how
to do that, please check out
        http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org/auto_instal.html
        http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org/spell_dic.html

An additional note:
If you're using Fedora Core or another distribution which by default
installs dictionaries for dozens of languages, you'll need to manually
edit the language list on your installation, and comment out most of these
un-needed languages. Otherwise you'll find your OpenOffice taking up minutes
of CPU time and hundreds of megabytes of memory the first time you spell-check
a word :-(
