Here is the outcome of the discussion on this list a few days ago about Alef and Lamed combining in the FreeSans and FreeSerif fonts:
It turns out that this is actually a bug in those fonts. Right now it only happens on Debian systems. But it may also start happening on other systems in future versions of OpenOffice.org. On Debian, I hope that a new version of the ttf-freefont package will come out soon. Watch for it on unstable. In the meantime, the problem in the font is actually very easy to fix manually using a font editor like the free program "fontforge". If anyone is interested in the details, let me know. As international support in OpenOffice.org becomes more advanced, these types of issues will probably start showing up in many fonts on all platforms. This is an issue to watch.
