I thought maybe the bridge interface is somehow special and does not allow listening, so I tried setting up an IP address on eth0, which I added to the bridge.
I haven't tried to replicate the complete scenario yet (I am about to, as time permits), but you definitively need to setup the IP address on the bridge interface (br0), not on the constituent interface (eth0).
