My comments had the wrong tone.  I completely agree with the idea and your 
comments above.  I too want an AST.  I just don't want to see this part of 
Bison destabilized for an extended period.  If we can't find a series of 
stable refactorings, perhaps we can find some temporary separation similar 
to push.c and yacc.c.
