Welcome, Matt! Scanning strings is something for flex to do, if the strings are constant. If you wish to change the set of valid strings dynamically or "often", you'll need to add them to a dictionary and search that dictionary in bison. Constructing a dictionary is simple with stuff like tsearch() and friends.
