Expense isn't really part of the equation here -- part of what I wanted to point out -- most people have load balancers around already (for their website or other applications), and if not they at least have Linux boxes and get load balancing for free.
Do you mean the expense of configuring it all? Sort of like configuring additional policy statements to accomplish the same thing? I agree, to each their own... But for some (where the load balancers already exist), it's almost silly not to use them.
