Here is the exact command and reply that we are using:
pos089998-1:/jim/cfengine-2.2.10 # ./configure 
--with-berkeleydb=/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.3.3
...
checking for BerkeleyDB location in /usr/local/BerkeleyDB.3.3... 
/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.3.3
checking Berkeley DB Version... configure: error: This release of cfengine 
requires BerkeleyDB 3.2 or later

It says that it finds 3.3 but then says that it needs 3.2 or later.  I'm pretty 
sure 3.3 is later than 3.2.

Perhaps you could give us a more details.   Using --with-berkeleydb= as a 
configure switch allows you to point to any Berkeley DB you like.
