Alas these examples are so contrived, to me, that I have difficulty following them. I would be remiss if I did not point out that using CNAMES for mail hosts is generally a bad thing but, I get your point. While I agree that it is nice to have all things dynamically figured out for you that is not always the case. Quite often one tends to set some high level classes (e.g. mxhost, ntp_servers) in a global scope so that they can be used without such an attempt at programming.
