Yes, but I have to admit that one of the most frustating things that I
have to deal with are programs that don't work, and for which there are
no workarounds.  I *do* realize that you and everyone else working
cfengine full-time is trying really hard to debug this problem; I don't
mean to slight or diminish that at all.

Isn't that what unix is all about--having enough rope? :)

I'm *not* reccommending that everyone go make up their own ps strings on
a whim, and expect it to work.  Instead, this would be something that a
sufficiently motivated and clueful admin could change as a last resort
(of sorts).

On one hand, I know that allowing this sort of customization is a
potential problem.  On the other hand, I have a strong sense of "make it
work (properly)."

I completely believe you, and you have my sympathies.  The wonderful
thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from.
