That wouldn't have helped, would it?  The problem was on a NIS client, not on a 
NIS server.  The NIS client had somehow lost its binding, but cfengine 
continued to process NIS netgroups, but now receiving different (empty) 
contents for its lookups. The fact that NIS (on this NIS client) ought to have 
been bound, but wasn't, ought to have been transmitting an error condition 
towards 'cfengine', which ought then to have been detecting that error 
condition.  But instead, it seems that something, somewhere was forgetting the 
error condition, so that cfengine proceeded as though all was well, but with an 
empty (or similar) netgroup.

As I say, this was a few years ago on v2 of cfengine.

Still, if any of the v3 developers are reading this, they might wish to do a 
quick code-check...
