Thank you;
Excellent references some of which I had actually skimmed previously and some
which were new to me. So It would seem that for the commercial version "Nova"
there are indeed many more reporting and monitoring features which are
aggregated at central hubs. Also, described was a binary "cf-report" with
somewhat limited reporting ability as compared to the Mission Portal. However,
reading further the standard reports do seem to have many good compliance
related reports (i.e. File_change, File_diffs, Hashes, Promises_kept... etc).
Additionally, future enhancements to monitoring seem immanent via
Constellation. What I have seen so far will cover my immediate needs assuming
that cf-report command can be run via a scripted process or perhaps cfengine
itself?

However, I did find somewhat conflicting remarks within the documentation (and
elsewhere) which appear to suggest the cfengine should not be utilized as a
monitoring/reporting system. This along with remarks on integration with Zenoss
and several write-ups concerning the use of Nagios, would naturally lead one to
wonder about future direction.

Perhaps, a better version of my initial question would then become: is the
current monitoring and reporting features of CF strategic? Or, is it likely
they will be dropped as per the mantra that scalability is the products main
focus. There is nothing wrong with that focus of course. But I would far prefer
being aligned with the companies long term goals, then only to discover later
that scaling ability has been impaired by reliance on a depreciated feature.

Thanks again, Juan
