I do this sort of thing regularly, but I have an update.cf that will do an "svn up" in places where the proper context is met, and "svn co" where files do not yet exist. The svn update is done every time cf-agent runs on the client. I see no reason to use external scripts, I just keep the appropriate files in the repository in locations based upon OS and maybe filesystem factors.
