After much delay, painfully long after Rob Kolstad created the list, I am announcing a users' configuration management mailing list, [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have not created any content around the list, so consider this email the first version of the list manifesto.
To sign up, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with 'subscribe config-mgmt' in the body of the email. The list is meant to be a users' analogue to the LSSConf list, which is an offshoot of the yearly configuration management workshop at LISA. While the LSSConf list is largely focused on theory, this list is focused on practice. There are currently multiple lists that discuss the practice of configuration management (in fact, all four lists to which this email is being sent), but these discussions quickly become off-topic on any single list because of how wide-ranging they are. The list is meant to be a central forum for all topics related to building, implementing, and managing better mechanisms for maintaining computers of all types. Installing, monitoring, user management, upgrades, service lifecycle, and change control are all topics well-suited for this list. The list is especially meant to be a great place to discuss integration of multiple applications, which most organizations have to do at some point but which often seem off-topic on a given application's forum. It can often be a fine line between whether one is doing application management and what is generally called configuration management (e.g., a system purely for managing apache configurations across tens of systems could be either), so this list will default to most things beinng on-topic but with a strong focus on automation and centralization. If you are interested in helping to build content for the web site (http://config.sage.org), I am definitely looking for help. I plan on starting with a FAQ, and I'm assuming someone will recommend a wiki before they even finish reading this email, but I appreciate all recommendations. I am also glad to answer any questions people might have about how the list should be used or whether they should sign up.
