Hi, 1) on http://www.cfengine.org/users.phtml you can find some example sites using cfengine. 2) I'm using cfengine to manage about 300 Unix/Linux servers/desktops and enjoying the huge benefits of policy based management. This is the kind of things that after full deployment you don't know how you managed without it.
To reduce problems which might arise due to misconfiguration/bugs I've created development environment which consist all the platforms used on production. This step is necessary also if you buy similar commercial software. It's not because it's open source.
