Very often a mode will bind the tab key to some sort of an "indent" function, which makes sense for the mode you're in at the time. C-h k <tab> (Mnemonically, "help, key, tab") will tell you what the tab key is bound to. -- I tend to view "truly flexible" by another term: "Make everything equally hard". -- DHH
