My crystal ball says that you don't have the `words' file. If it came with the speller distribution, customize the variable ispell-alternate-dictionary to point to its full absolute file name; if it didn't come with the speller, you need to find it somewhere (every Unix and GNU/Linux station has such a file somewhere) and install it on your system.
