What kind of drive is drive S: in your case? Why does Emacs complain
that it cannot write to that drive?
It is a partion on the local hard-drive like C:.
With the old version of emacs there is no problem to use S:
I have 5,84 GB (6 272 416 207 byte) on S:. Many of the files is handled by
using emacs.
This is my main working area for software.
If you edit the file s:/wp/test_ny.boj, then type this:
C-x C-w ~/test_ny.boj RET
Works:
Saving file c:/Users/bojoh/AppData/Roaming/test_ny.boj...
Wrote c:/Users/bojoh/AppData/Roaming/test_ny.boj
So for some reason, Emacs cannot write to this partition, probably
because of some access rights for your user.
Also, please try doing this in "emacs -Q", in case some of your
customizations get in the way.
The same problem:
Can you take ownership on all the files on the S: drive, via the
Windows File Explorer? For each directory on S:, you can do that by
right-clicking on the directory in the Explorer, then clicking on the
Security tab, then clicking on "Advanced" at the bottom, then clicking
on "Change" on the second line, where it shows the current Owner (that
will pop the Elevation dialog, where you need to click YES). In the
next dialog, type your Windows user name and click OK. Then, back on
the "Advanced Security Settings" dialog check the checkbox at the
bottom saying "Replace all child object permissions..." and click OK;
this will propagate your ownership to all the files and
subdirectories, recursively. Do this for all the top-level
directories in the root directory of drive S: and then see if that
helped.
If it doesn't help, then maybe the problem is in how you did the
partition or something.
I don't know why it worked in Emacs 29, but my guess is that it's
somehow related to the fact that you installed Emacs 31.1 built with
the UCRT runtime library. So if nothing above helps, one other idea
is to download the MSVCRT build of Emacs by running pacman again to
request that build. And if that doesn't help, either, try the binary
from the GNU FTP site.
HTH
I have tried the binary from the GNU FTP site.
The emacs-31.1_1-installer.exe and emacs-31.1_1-installer-UCRT64.exe
have both the problem described before.
I have installed emacs-30.2-installer.exe. It works OK!
I will later use a Perl program to check the ownership of all the files
in S:, before doing what you suggest.
Note: In s:/wp/test.boj I have checked that file-readable-p and
file-writable-p are true.
