It looks like it is fixed since:
./configure --prefix=/opt && make -j3 && make check
..passed without any mishaps.
Will try to build the package and let you know.
I was pretty sure it was working since I tried to run distcheck with -j2:
make -j2 distcheck
I hadn't realized the problem during development because the dep files
in .deps contain all the dependences, while those in the .tar.gz are
empty...
