Well, Image Magick depends on many libs. Maybe you are lacking some basic libs that people usually have on their machines when they are trying to install GIFT? So, let's find out.
I would suggest you to look into the gift-prerequisites package, take the image magick there and install it by hand in the directory of your choice. When running configure, generate an output of the configure run and look if it has found libs that have a relation to jpg and ppm image file formats. Then check if your new installation works.
