Aya,

let me answer those in order. I actually use GIFT to sort medical forms
personally, and am also a developer on OpenEMR, so am quite interested in
your ideas. :)

there is no forum, but there is this list, which is the proper place to
contact people interested in the software. there are not many of us, and i
have just recently taken over as maintainer of this software.

for a 'getting started' doc, i am still writing one, and it is based on
Debian/Linux. I do not have access to windows machinery, nor do i want it.
While i do not reject patches for windows compatibility, i have not received
any, and am not going to be developing for that platform.

1: probably yes(can denotes ability), but will require use of the CYGWIN
package, to get compilers and unix-like functionality out of windows. I can
not really advise much, as GIFT has a lot of dependancies i do not know how
to set up on a windows platform.

2: what you have is the program source. that source code needs compiled,
into a working binary for your platform, which will likely require the
CYGWIN rigamarole referenced above.

3: i am working on a technology demo, but have not had time to complete it.
If you're interested in seeing a demonstration in a more timely manner than
i can provide through the free software time i have to dedicate, that will
require either putting it together yourself, some input of financial
resources so that i can prioritize this over other paying work, or just wait
patiently for me to get done with
http://linuxpmi.org/trac/wiki/QemuGiftServer , and place a demo online.

Features extracted by gift are stored in a custom-to-gift FTS file format.
gift includes an agregator, that turns these into a series of indexed
databases, for performing 'find like image' queries.

I hope this helps. If you're interested in 'pushing from behind, i recomend
either trying to compile it on windows with cygwin and posting your results
here (for other developers), or aquiring a debian/linux based platform,
which you can crib large sections of my directions for.
