I was quite excited to find a free program to typeset music, and as my
first project I decided to try to enter an a cappella piece that I
arranged a couple of years ago. I think I've got a lot of the basics down,
but I've come across a couple things that I can't seem to replicate in
lilypond.

In my original (pre-lily), I had a grand staff enclosing one or more staff
groups. The number of parts also varies throughout the piece; I don't want
to maintain blank staffs through the entire piece just because it's needed
on a single page.

Here's (roughly) my ideal for a given page of music (where "{" is a
grandstaff, and "|" is some sort of connecting bar):

  {  == solo  ==
  {
  { |== sop   ==
  { |== alto  ==
  { |== tenor ==
  { |== bass  ==

  {  == solo  ==
  {
  { |== trio  ==
  { |== trio  ==
  {
  { |== sop   ==
  { |== alto  ==
  { |== tenor ==
  { |== bass  ==

The main problems I am having are:

  I can't nest a StaffGroup inside a GrandStaff. According to
  documentation, this shouldn't work anyway; I was just hoping someone
  might have a better suggestion, before I start to teach myself lilypond
  internals...

  I can't make a new staff appear where I want. In the picture above, I
  CAN make the trio appear below the bass line, but there are times when
  that's not appropriate (imagine the need to split an alto line into two
  separate lines, for example).

Suggestions? Examplse? Documentation I overlooked? I suspect I'll need to
start teaching myself how to modify lilypond to suit my needs... =)
