I found out that MetaPost wasn't installed on my system. The following
text in INSTALL.txt didn't tell me that I really needed it. And since I'm
no real TeX wizard...

With MetaPost installed, `mfplain.mp' is in the right directory on my
SuSE Linux 6.2, and so Lilypond 1.2.17 compiles.
