If you have 1.2.17, you should read the corresponding version of 
the tutorial, see http://appel.dyndns.org/lilypond/websites.phtml
However, if you want a more recent version with more features, 
including chords, I recommend that you upgrade to the latest
development version (a few features work better in 1.3.54).
