Dual-mode makefile? 32 and 64 bit

Hi all,
I want to avoid learning autoconf/automake and simply
create a makefile that will be able to detect whether
my Linux box is 64 bit or not.
After some perusing of the make manual however
I am finding no easy answers.
Can anyone assist?
