I suspect your HOSTLISTURL value in your configuration has some bad value in there (an entry not starting with 'http://'), causing libcurl to say that it does not understand the specified protocol.
Changing your HOSTLISTURL setting so that it only contains valid, reachable hostlists should fix this.
