Also, all Wikis that I know tend to end up having VERY different
translations with very different structure.  With the current system,
we at least have a reasonable chance of comparable content in different
languages.
Dokuwiki has a great plugin for this, it tell us when a translation is not up to date (and we can view all revision between the original and the translation).

spam would end up being 90% of the website, or we'd end up spending
more time deleting spam than writing documentation).
I agree.
The same thing applies to the wiki.
The publishing of pages will be moderated ( preliminary human validation) or authorized only in some privileged persons.
