I've installed glibc-2.1.91 and gcc-2.96. The only difference I noticed was that the compiler crashed on some sources when using the -O2, the error with the pointer still remains. Of course this is an experimental glibc release, like the one I used before (I was not using the one supplied with the RH6.2 box). Let's just hope the problem is fixed in 2.2.
