one of the libtool experts from fink told me that OS X will not allow
creation of an empty archive. He suspected a gnulib bug, or a problem
with the way gnulib is being used.
Mac OS X 10.5.6, gcc 4.0.1 (Apple's), libtool 2.2.6 or 1.5.26
Suggestions?
