In particular, Simon is referring to this: http://www.gnupg.org/documentation/manuals/gcrypt/Initializing-the-library.html Recent versions of gcrypt grudgingly perform their own initialization if the caller does not do so, but it is strongly recommended to initialize the library explicitly instead. hth, --dkg
