Thanks! That worked! I've been puzzling over that for a long time
(years, actually).

Sorry about the cross post. I did not cross post until I had waited
over a day for it to appear on comp.lang.c++.moderated. When I had not
even seen it appear (without a response) I thought it had gone into a
black hole like some of my other attempts at posting at
comp.lang.c++.moderated. I guess I should have been more patient.

I am delighted to have received such a helpful response!

Anyway, can anyone speculate with (for) me as to why the compiler (and
c++ specification) works this way? It does not seem logical to only
search the std namespace. It seems that writing application specific
code for the std namespace should be forbidden.
