Ok, I've narrowed this down somewhat. I don't think it is a Xilinx- ism. And I don't think it is g++-ism.
I took the same sample code and compiled it with Visual Studio 2005, and got the same result. So I think I'm going to head over to comp.lang.c++ for help on this one.
