When I boot it says "GNU GRUB version 1.97~beta4" above the grub menu.
This is most definitely older than March 14th, as my original post was
made before that :-)
Thanks for your work on GRUB and for trying it. If I get a chance I'll
update to latest and try it myself too, but I'm sure it's fixed. Did it
also get a bit faster by any chance? I'm assuming that there's no ubuntu
package already that's as new as that?

of GRUB script parser and lexer recently, and is merged to trunk on
2010-03-14. If your GRUB version is older than 2010-03-14 please try
with the latest.
