grub seems to work fine, but just before the menu comes up,

It doesn't seem to relate to anything in the start
scripts in /etc/grub.d. I am not an accomplished
programmer, so I am asking if anyone knows how
to get rid of it.

Thanks, John

Bingo! The error was in /etc/default/grub. GRUB_THEME was defined
and I didn't notice it. Only GRUB_BACKGROUND should have been
defined.

Thanks for setting me on the right track!
