To find out where GRUB 2 is installed, the user can run the following
commands:
Device: sudo grub-probe -t device /boot/grub
UUID: sudo grub-probe -t fs_uuid /boot/grub
That's nice as far as it goes, which is no help to me. I'm trying to
reconfigure a broken multiboot system, and need to know where Grub2 was or
should have been installed while booted to an OS with no Grub2 installed. Is
this covered somewhere on
http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/index.html ? Looking at the
index nothing jumps out at me.
What I think happened is that Ubuntu was installed, but without bootloader
installation anywhere. /boot/grub obviously contains Grub2 files, but there
is no grub.cfg there, thus no way to estimate cmdline options to get it to
boot from some other bootloader. I see nothing in /etc/default/grub or
/etc/grub.d/ that would seem to indicate whether Grub2 was or should have
been installed to MBR, or /boot or /. How do I tell?
