Not quite, grub2 will modify some fields inside it when it is written
to disk. But it should not change size of it.

So if I shrink the gap before 1st partition to a size, bigger than
core.img, I'm save not having damaged GRUB 2 installation?

was used during grub installation?
No, I'm absolutely unsure. That's why I'm asking here on the list. My question
in little other words:
How to dertermine, how many bytes of the gap between MBR and 1st partition are used by GRUB 2, so
should not be deleted or shrinked or used otherwise
