PC-BSD is layered on the FreeBSD kernel + FreeBSD OS.
Haven't got there, but I'm heading here... I expect once I get the FreeBSD kernel to boot, I'll be able to boot PC-BSD

Yes, Grub2 supports FreeBSD. I tested this out at one time, but we no longer use Grub to boot FreeBSD in our scenario. I have a blog post that may help you even though it's not specifically tailored to your scenario:
