Wrong word.
I forget the installer's phrasing. But there is a point where it asks
permission to install to a default location on the primary hard disk.
Do you mean the disk boot sector, aka MBR ? Don't do this when doing a
temporary test installation.
If you let each new installation write its own GRUB instance into the
MBR, of course this will overwrite the existing one present in that same
location. Running update-grub from the main installation will not
reinstall the main installation GRUB instance as the primary boot loader
and will not change the boot order. You need to run grub-install for this.
