I forgot to add that, in the attempts you have seen at gls-help, I used LAM as provided by Debian in the meta-package GROMACS. Unsure if all headers were comprised, I have installed a new version, 1.3.3 of openmpi, compiled gfortran, as OCTOPUS needs all libraries compiled with the same compiler (Debian libraries are compiled with gfortran). This is aside another installation of openmpi (1.2.6), Intel compiled.
