For smaller problems go with LAPACK/BLAS. For large dense matrix problems go with Elemental (Jack Poulson @ UTexas). One caveat, Elemental as with PETSc/SLEPc, is based on MPI and this relationship not transparent. You will need to understand MPI to effectively use Elemental and/or PETSc/SLEPc.
