But are you sure you are exporting XDG_DATA_DIRS?
For what it's worth, I export that variable for GNOME to find the applications
I install with Flatpak, and it works. I don't use .profile though, I use
.bash_profile for that and to start the shepherd for user-level services when I
log in to the desktop.
