I just had an epiphany — the whole point of the Linux Volume Manager is to 
abstract away this problem. If the Guix System were to be deployed entirely on 
one logical volume, then it should not matter what physical volumes are 
backing that.

And all I need to start should be a single SSD, on which I would initialize a 
stack of appropriate volumes. Everything else can come in steps, as hoped for.

Thank you for entertaining my questions. The responses did facilitate the 
aforementioned epiphany.
