Two other experiences about powering down that might be helpful to
people in similar situations:
One of my laptops sometimes fails to find the root disk, especially
after an unclean shutdown. It runs with full disk encryption, and after
entering the grub password, nothing happens. (Oh, in retrospect, this
could perhaps be the same issue as yours.) I need to turn the machine
off, disconnect the power, and let it be off for a couple of minutes
(not 48 hours).
Another machine sometimes boots into a non-free operating system that (I
think) loads some binary blobs into the network hardware. When I reboot
to Guix, I can only use `sudo` for about a minute, in which I need to
shutdown properly, then disconnect all power and(/or?) network, and wait
about 20 minutes. Then everything works fine again (usually).
(By the way, if someone knows a VR headset that works well with libre
Guix, I'd appreciate a recommendation.)
