Yes. After those are configured, installing packages natively has many
advantages over the dirty cross-install stuff (main advantage is that
preinst scripts are run).

Yes, most likely the easiest thing. If you have two machine, you can use one
as a gateway to the Hurd in your local network.

Unfortunately, no. There are no X packages in the archive. Get libraries and
clients from
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/hurd/debian
The servers are not packaged at all yet, and it is not straightforward to
install them.
