If you contribute then you are a part of the team. There is no official
membership, no tests required.

You only need to know how to write bug reports. More generally, it all
depends on what you are interested in. People are needed to write
documentation. Plenty of bugs still abound so general testers are also
needed. If you like, you could hack the kernel or write servers.
Anything that you do will be appreciated.

The mailing lists are the primary way that the developers communicate.
There is the Boston SHEE (The Boston chapter of the Society of Hurd
Enthusiasts and Experimenters). We are meeting at MIT on the 30th. If
you are around you are more then welcome.
Either way, I recommend that you install the hurd and play with it. Then,
depending on where your interests lie, take it from there.
