I think the question is philisophical.  One of the reasons I'm excited 
about the Hurd is that major components can be ripped and replaced on the 
fly.  One of the biggest things that got me excited about the Hurd was 
the idea of having a Netware-like ability to replace my NIC drivers on 
the fly.
