After looking at the exchanges, I recall that there have been
a few fixes on the linux block.c and CDROM access code in the
last 12 months or so. (linux kernel between somewhere 2.2.6 and
2.2.16). I remember this since I had a different CDROM access problem
(SCSI multi-LUN device) and kept track of CDROM-related troubles
on the linux mailing list.
I suspect that the current problem was inherited from the original bug(s) on
the linux side.
Sorry, I don't have the time to check the linux kernel source changes
myself. But someone in the know might want to check it out.
(Say, by looking at the linux patches on http://www.kernel.org/
for 2.2.x series.)
Just my two cents worth.
