3. It's not monolithic program as some other kernels ;-)  Instead, "The 
Hurd is a collection of servers (user processes) that run on the Mach 
microkernel"[1] and communication between these servers (Inter-Process 
Communication--IPC) is expensive in GNU Mach.  We hope L4 to solve this 
problem at least partially :-)
