I installed hurd a few days before using the tar ball
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/hurd/contrib/marcus/gnu-latest.tar.gz.
That is an old tarball (from augustus IIRC). I think there is a newer one made
by someone else, but I cannot remember by who or where it can be downloaded,
hopefully someone else can tell you.
I believe it was Joachim Nilsson who made it, check out the
http://hurd.gnufans.org/bin/view/Distrib/TarballNotes20030126 (I've just
added the URL for the tarball download)
